General

St. Paul’s School seeks a passionate and talented Business Management and/or Economics teacher with the qualifications and experience necessary for effective IB Diploma instruction.  

 

The Business Management and Economics Department is part of the Humanities faculty. The sub jects are highly popular IB Diploma courses at St. Paul’s, with strong examination results. Many pupils continue their studies in these fields at top universities in the US, UK, Europe, and Brazil. While a specialist in Business or Economics is preferred, candidates with the ability to teach additional disciplines are welcome. IB experience is an advantage, but training and guidance will be provided. 

 

A full commitment to school life and ongoing professional development is expected. 

In addition to teaching duties, the successful candidate will a have a pastoral role and be a tutor to a group of Senior School pupils. Tutoring is a significant part of a teacher’s responsibilities at St. Paul’s, both in terms of time devoted to it and its contribution towards the successful running of the school. Participation in enrichment clubs and societies will also be expected. 

Economics and Business Department 

This well-organised department continually seeks improvement. There are currently four teachers, with around 40 pupils per subject per Sixth Form year group. Some pupils choose to study both subjects. 

While the primary focus is Sixth Form teaching, teachers are expected to engage across all age groups and abilities. Experience with assessment for learning and using diverse activities to enhance critical thinking and IB Learner Profile skills is an advantage. 

The department is committed to digital innovation, making experience in digital resource development valuable. Teachers must also challenge high-achieving pupils, foster real-world connections through guest speakers and visits, and support pupils in international competitions.

Teacher of IB Business Management and Economics main responsibilities: 

To guide, prepare and develop St. Paul's pupils to reach their potential by promoting and nurturing learning and understanding in different aspects of your subject specialism. 

  • Through a holistic (enhancing skills and abilities) approach to teaching and learning, encourage a positive attitude of learning, a critical spirit, an independent attitude, awareness of global citizenship and a high quality British and Brazilian education for the academic and personal development of pupils following the school’s mission and values. 

  • To stimulate pupil learning by offering a variety of curricular opportunities to develop subject skills through a differentiated learning landscape which also includes use of digital resources in order to foster talents and abilities in pupils. 

  • Monitor, support and assess pupils and provide timely and effective feedback to ensure pupil progress (both to parents and pupils), through the reporting framework, attending parent’s meetings or any appropriate evaluation tool, including the analysis of data. 

  • To promote a safe environment for learning to pupils throughout the school as a subject teacher to ensure all pupils are happy, safe and supported, promoting a strong sense of community aligned to school values 

  • Plan and deliver lessons of appropriate type, content and quality for different year groups across senior school, working as a team player, following your department guidelines and school policy and to ensure pupil progress 

  • Run workshop sessions and recuperação activities to offer support to pupils learning and contribute to the enrichment programme. 

  • Attend departmental and staff meetings to follow the school’s plans and development training sessions in order to have a continuous sharing of best practice and administrative training. 

  • Carry out duties by overseeing pupils during break and lunch times on a regular basis 

  • Invigilate examinations when necessary within the school timetable. 

  • Cover for absent teachers when requested. 

  • Participate in, evaluate and record appropriate professional development to support best practice and personal professional goals following school guidelines. 

  • Be a pastoral tutor; take responsibility for the safety and well-being of a small group of pupils in a particular year group, within the school`s pastoral structure. 

  • Provide mentorship and collaborative support to local teaching staff, sharing insights into British teaching methodologies and approaches in areas such as pupil assessment, differentiated instruction, and classroom management.

  • Actively participate in and lead professional development workshops for colleagues, focusing on UK education standards, including current trends and innovative practices within the British education system. Share and model strategies that bridge the British and local curricula, fostering an inclusive environment that integrates the strengths of both systems.

  • Assist with ensuring that the school's teaching approaches and standards are consistent with UK expectations, contributing to any UK accreditation processes, and sharing insights on how the school can align with or exceed those standards.

  • Play a role in engaging with parents, particularly those familiar with the British educational system, helping them understand how their child’s learning journey aligns with British expectations.

Leadership responsibilities 

 

The Head of the subject area would have the following main responsibilities: 

  • Lead a team of teachers and manage, monitor and support pupil learning in the subject. 

  • Be responsible for standards of learning and teaching and for monitoring progress of all pupils. They will uphold the school values and drive Senior School initiatives. The head of department is therefore responsible for the professional development, the performance and the behaviour of departmental staff and for the care of all resources allocated to the department. 

  • Attend regular meetings with the Head of the Humanities faculty. 

 

  1. Staff management 

 

  • To consult with the relevant leaders regarding staffing needs. 

  • To coach and induct newcomers to the department in school and department ethos and administrative procedures. 

  • To support colleagues to develop their teaching practice, acting as a role model. 

  • To participate in the school’s staff review process. 

  • To deliver staff development sessions to the department as needed. 

  • To ensure, when a teacher leaves the school, that teaching records and resources are left in order. 

  

  1. Administrative 

 

  • To prepare and submit an annual departmental budget in agreement with the Head of Humanities and Senior Leadership Team, to supervise and control expenditure. 

  • To take pride in the presentation of rooms. 

  • To report damage to rooms, furniture and equipment (usually used by the department) to the service desk, to ensure that all equipment is regularly serviced and that damaged furniture is removed and replaced. 

  • To participate in department meetings. 

 

This post is full time. Staff are expected to be in school from 7.30am to 4:00pm during term time. With one hour for lunch. In addition to normal working hours teaching staff will need to attend school meetings and functions that are held outside these times. The successful applicant is expected to work the hours that are necessary to fulfil their responsibilities and meet the needs of the school.

Job requirements

  • University degree preferably in Business and/or Economics. 

  • Certified teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE from the UK). 

  • Fluent or native English speaker. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Microsoft Teams. 

  • Strong time management skills. 

  • Up-to-date curriculum knowledge. 

  • Team player, collaborative, proactive, and enthusiastic.
